Welch Allyn is a fourth generation family owned business that was founded in 1915. Located in Skaneateles Falls, New York, they manufacture medical diagnostic devices and were on the list of 100 Best companies to Work For in 2003 by Fortune Magazine. Today, third and fourth generation workers are still very involved in the company helping manage operations and serving on the board of directors. Otoscopes: Are used to examine the aural and nasal cavities. They consist of a head that holds a disposable speculum and a handle. They can be portable or be attached to a wall and are lighted either by the attachment on a wall or battery. They also offer low power magnification which aids in diagnosis of various illnesses. .
Ophthalmoscopes: Are used by physicians and ophthalmologists to see the back of the eye. They are used as part of routine medical examinations or as a part of an eye examination. During an examination the health of the vitreous humor and retina can be determined. Eye health in diabetics is also an important use for Ophthalmoscopes. .
Stethoscopes: Uses include listening to the sounds of the heart lungs and stomach. There are several types of stethoscopes, the most common being the acoustical. This is the one we see our Doctors and nurses using in doctors and hospitals everywhere. Other types include the electronic stethoscope and an Adscope (pediatrics). .
Medical Thermometers: Used for measuring the temperature of the human body. There are several different types of Medical Thermometers, including liquid filled, mercury filled electronic, liquid crystal filled, remote and contact. There can also be grouped by when the temperature is taken. They include orally, axillary (armpit), rectally or aurally. .
Sphygmomanometers: Are also known as blood pressure meter and are used for the measurement of the human blood pressure. They may be electronic or manual. The latter requires the use of a stethoscope to determine at what point the pressure flow starts and when it is unimpeded. They consist of an inflatable cuff, a measuring unit and an inflation device (manual or electric).
